Shish Taouk served with Tomato Garlic Rice

Shish Tawook is traditional Arabic and Turkish dish... Shish means skewer in Turkish although seekh is the word for skewer in classical Arabic and taouk or tavuk (pronounced "tah-wouk") means chicken in Turkish.

Ingredients for Shish Tawook:
Chicken boneless 1 pound cubes
Salt 1 tsp (to taste)
black pepper 1 tsp
garlic powder 1 tsp
sumac 1 tbsp (its an arabic spice... available easily in Desi store here in Chicago)
lemon juice 2 tbsp
oil 2 tbsp
bell pepper 1, cube

For Rice:
Rice 250 gm (2 1/2 cups)
garlic 2 tbsp freshly crushed ( i used 1 tbsp paste)
Tomatoes 1 cup blended
crushed red chilies 1 tsp
cumin seeds (zeera) 1 tsp
salt 2 1/2 tsp (to taste)
water 2 1/2 cup (or you can adjust)
oil 4 tbsp

First cook the chicken pieces and take out all ingredients

Marinate Chicken pieces with all the ingredients and leave it for minimum 2 hrs...

Now, you have two options: One is you soak wooden skewers in cold water for about half an hour, and then string on the marinated chicken and bell pepper... and then grill the chicken till tender

Second option is what I did... place the chicken pieces on grilling pan... cook till they get tender

For bell peppers, just put cubed bell pepper in the left over  marination and then

Just grill them for 2-3 minutes

Then cook Rice...

Heat oil add garlic and fry till light golden

Add washed rice...(Don't soak them)...  add rice and toast it for 2-3 minutes or until garlic and oil cover each grain...

Add cumin and red pepper ... mix and stir for two minutes

Add blended tomatoes, mix and then add water and salt and cook rice covered

Cook rice till you get this bubbly position... simmer and cook till rice get tender...

Dish out rice and serve them with cooked chicken...
