Urad dal, also known as Split Black Gram, is one of the famous lentils used in southern part of Asia, especially in Indian cuisine. This is a very comforting dal for a cold day. Urad dal is stickier and heavier than other dals, so this is a thick-style dal. Rich in dietary fibre and protein, black gram when cooked is sticky and is a heavier dal. Urad dal does take time to cook and when slow cooked gets slimy.
Recipe of urad dal is straightforward, easy to make. There are a few variations to the basic urad ki daal with each version having an addictive, unique flavor. With warming flavors, urad dal made for a perfect vegetarian meal.

Ingredients:
Urad dal 1/2 cup, wash and soak in water for 1-2 hours
Tomatoes 2, medium, finely chopped
Garlic 2-3 cloves, finely minced
Ginger 1", finely minced
Kasuri methi 1/2 tsp, crushed
Green chilis 3, slit
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Red chili powder 1 tsp
Coriander powder 1/2 tsp
Garam masala powder 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Cilantro 2 tbsps, finely chopped for garnish
Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
Oil 2 tbsp
