These Cinnamon Sugar French Toast Sticks are my girls absolute favorite breakfast treat. They taste more like dessert than breakfast. Thick slices of Brioche bread get dipped in an egg mixture, then are pan fried until crisp and caramelized on the outside. The inside stays soft and fluffy and melts in your mouth. After cooking they are immediately tossed in cinnamon and sugar while they are still hot.
I love regular French toast but it’s even better portable. Easy to dip and dunk into your favorite maple syrup.
The key to french toast sticks that are stiff enough to pick up without flopping is to use stale bread and to use a block loaf you can cut yourself into thick slices (the thicker the sticks, the less they flop). This is the way I like my french toast sticks, I really do recommend using stale bread where possible for french toast – any french toast. It makes a huge difference because fresh bread soaks up too much egg mixture – even if you dunk it in really quickly – and you’ll end up with french toast that is soggy on the inside.
Cook them in butter. Yes, butter! Lots of hot, sizzling yummy butter. It will give the french toast sticks a golden, crisp, delicious exterior.
Make a sample first! It can take a bit of practice to know when you’ve dipped the bread long enough. If you let the bread sit in the egg mixture too long it will be soggy or undone in the middle. If you don’t dip long enough then the french toast will be like plain bread in the middle instead of that fluffy, slightly creamy inside texture that great french toast is suppose to have. A test sample is best if you’re just not sure.
I recommend freezing these French Toast in a single layer on a baking sheet before moving it to a zip-top bag. Just make sure French toast sticks are completely cool before moving them to a gallon-sized zip-top bag for freezing. The sticks will keep well frozen for up to two months. Pull out as many sticks as you want to reheat at a time.
These french toast sticks are super easy and come together in minutes. They are sweet enough that you don’t need any maple syrup. Then again, yes you DO need it! It’s so much fun to dunk and dip these french toast sticks.
Skip the store bought frozen french toast sticks and give the homemade version a try. They are so much better!
